For diabetics to inform their teachers.
The myths that come with type one diabetes:
1. People with type 1 diabetes can’t eat sugar -
People with diabetes can eat what they want when they want to. Sure sugar is not recommended all the time for people living with diabetes, but who can deny a piece of cake?
2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by being overweight -
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease caused by the body attacking the pancreas. It has nothing to do with weight or diet. Our pancreases have just declared war against our bodies!
3. Adults can’t get type 1 diabetes -
Even though it is called 'juvenile diabetes' does not mean you can only get it at a young age!
4. Kids will grow out of type 1 diabetes -
Sadly, type one diabetes is a lifelong disease that is still in need of a cure.
5. Artificial sweeteners are good for people with type 1 diabetes -
I think this one is all based off of preference, if you want to have sugar, go for it! If you do not want to risk your blood sugar spiking maybe stick with the sugar free stuff!
6. You get type 1 diabetes from eating too much sugar -
This is the most frustrating myth out there. NO way no how is type one caused by eating to much sugar. That is type two. If you are going to talk to a diabetic about diabetes make sure you know the types!
7. People with type 1 diabetes can’t play sports -
This is not true whatsoever! We just have to be careful with watching our blood sugar. If you have a pump all you have to do is disconnect for the time being.
8. The insulin pump cures type 1 diabetes -
Yet again, sadly this is not true. It is only a temporary solution to the problem, kind of like putting duct tape over a leak it only works for so long, then you have to make some adjustments.
9. Type 1 diabetes can be cured with diet and exercise -
I hope you never say this to a diabetic! Again I advise you to get your facts straight between a type one and type two before having this conservation. There is no cure for type one.

Genius Hour Semester 2 Reflection and Evaluation

The Title of Your Genius Hour Project: Understanding a high schooler with diabetes
Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of my Genius Hour Project is to give more alert to the teachers in Kingsford High School. All of the teachers get a vague letter from the nurse explaining the go around of diabetes and what to do in cases of emergencies, but it is given from a nurse's perspective and not an actual teenage diabetic. The reason I wanted to do this project was because as a diabetic is high school, it can be very frustrating when the teachers do not understand your disease. I wanted to send out an explanation of the disease in a way that the teachers can understand how the student feels.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative.
I started my Genius Hour by just doing my website and making that look good and it being relevant to my topic. I then looked on pictures for pictures about diabetes that I could put on my site for people to see and read to hopefully help them understand a little more. After my page was complete, I started writing my paper for the teachers.
Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
I decided to do my project on diabetes awareness for the teachers because when I was diagnosed four years ago, entering high school, I felt like no one really knew how to handle me. I wanted to make sure that all of the other diabetics are treated how they need to be.
I started my project by deleting all of my previous information on my Weebly page because I did my first project on teaching. When my page was cleared, I began to search on Pinterest for cute related diabetic pictures and sayings. I put those on my sayings and pictures tab of my blog page.
Once my page was completed to my standards, I started making an informational hand-out for the teachers so they can understand diabetes from a diabetics standpoint. Once that is complete I will be giving it to Mrs. Sutton and the nurse so they can email it to all of the teachers.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
To share my Genius Hour Project, I will be giving my project to the nurse and to Mrs. Sutton. After it is reviewed, they will send it to the teachers so they get a better understanding of how to take care of a diabetic in the classroom.
I hope they take the time to read it and to try and understand all of the information that is given to them. I also hope they do some further research and keep it with them for the years to come.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I did things differently with my Genius Hour I would take more time to do my project and get more things done. I would have liked to discuss more of how I was affected by what some teachers said or did without knowing I was bothered by it. I would have like to have made my page more informational.
I also wish that I could have gotten information out to the public rather than it just staying within our school system. I could have gotten the information to schools nearby because they may not know what to do either.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I believe I did well on notifying the teachers on how to handle a diabetic in high school. I hope that they find the information valuable. I also hope for the information to be used for the years to come because I will be leaving high school, but I am sure there will be more diabetics with the same problems that I have faced.
My Weebly page turned out nice as well. I was overall happy with my completed project. I would say that I have met all of my personal goals and have accomplished all of the things that I hoped to.
Include any videos, pictures, presentations, or artifacts that will document your journey.
The following information is from the perspective of a Type 1 diabetic teenager who wants to inform as many people as possible about….
The Myths Associated with Type 1 Diabetes:

Even though we wish it was, sadly this is not true. It is only a temporary solution to the problem, kind of like putting duct tape over a leak it only works for so long, then you have to make some adjustments. The pump definitely helps control diabetes, but it does not cure it.
9. Type 1 diabetes can be cured with diet and exercise -
I hope you never say this to a diabetic! Again I advise you to get your facts straight between a type one and type two before having this conservation. There is no cure for type one.
Above are just a few myths that diabetics wish others did not take as truths. We, as diabetics, are always told to be patient with people who are not diabetics and their false accusations, but it is frustrating when people do not take the time to educate themselves about a disease that affects so many. This is why I am sharing this information with the teachers of Kingsford High School. I hope that in sharing this information, teachers can help to dispel the myths related to Type 1 diabetes.
When I was first diagnosed, my teachers did not know exactly how to handle me, which I completely understood because it is a scary situation to deal with when you are not properly educated. When a student asks to go to the nurse, the bathroom, or their locker for medical reasons, it is best not to ask too many questions; it embarrases the student.
The diabetic will most likely know when they need to have a friend bring him or her down to the nurse. If they do not ask it is generally not to that point, yet. A teacher should never deny a student to go check his or her blood sugar or ask him or her to wait until the lesson is over because sometimes blood sugars drop or rise to extremes within a matter of seconds and there is not time to wait. The teachers should understand and except that diabetics will miss days of school due to the multiple doctors they are required to visit yearly, bi-yearly, and sometimes even monthly.
Thank you for taking the time to read this! I hope that you take this information with you for the years to come.
